Handheld Super Mario Bros Game and Watch console is a perfect piece of nostalgia

Nostalgia fans will love this new handheld classic Super Mario game.

The original Game & Watch system was released in Japan in 1980.

It was the very first handheld gaming console created by Nintendo.

Now you can get your hands on a piece of history with a brand new entry in the series – a special golden and far more modern version on the 35th anniversary of Super Mario.

The USB-charged device is about the size of a credit card and feels incredibly light out of the box.

But when you turn it on its brilliantly bright and colourful screen puts other handheld gamepads to shame and shows exactly where those extra few pounds you would spend over competitors go.

The original 80s Nintendo Entertainment System Super Mario Bros game is the star of the show here and thanks to that lovely screen looks fresh and amazing.

You play the delightful plumber in the tough 2D platformer, and the D-pad and A and B buttons react perfectly to the game.

I’ve struggled in the past with cheaper basic handhelds like this, the reaction time of the controls can often be rubbish.

But here they’re great and you can have a seriously decent run as Mario without the need for that throw-against-the-wall frustration.

They’ve also loaded on the sequel, Super Mario Bros 2 from 1988 and there you also have the option of playing the game as Mario’s green hatted brother Luigi.

Throw in a Spectrum-like Mario-themed juggling game and a big clock to use the device as a timer and it’s not a bad little bundle at all.

Now, the issue here is the price.

Around £45 for what is ultimately a bit of retro fun is quite a lot of money.

Many will baulk and say it’s too much.

But what you get for that money, as I said earlier, is a quality game screen and two of the best video games ever created.

So the choice is yours.

It’s petite, easy to take on the go in a pocket, light and very good at what it does.

I’d recommend this as an ideal Christmas stocking pressie for a game-loving loved one who’s keen on collecting unique handhelds if you’re feeling flush.

VERDICT 4/5
