Fable is coming back for Xbox Series X

Fable, the whimsical Xbox role-playing game franchise, is coming back for Xbox Series X. Microsoft and Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon series, announced the new Fable during Thursday’s Xbox Games Showcase.

A teaser trailer for Fable shows a fantastical, verdant world inhabited by fairies … and fairy-eating frogs. There’s little to go on except the trailer’s tone, which radiates the Fable franchise’s cheeky approach to fantasy role-playing.

As the simple, straightforward name implies, Fable appears to be a new start for the 15-year-old franchise, which was created by Peter Molyneux’s Lionhead Studios. The first game, also known as Fable, was released in 2004 for the original Xbox. Two direct sequels were released for Xbox 360, as were a number of spinoffs. Microsoft’s most recent attempt to revive Fable came in the form of cooperative action RPG Fable Legends, an Xbox One game that was canceled in 2016.

The new Fable is coming to Xbox Series X and Windows PC, and will be available through Xbox Game Pass.
