Doom Eternal "Ancient Gods" Campaign Expansion Debuts

Id Software recently announced that Doom Eternal would be getting new campaign story content, called Ancient Gods. As part of Gamescom Opening Night Live, we got our first look at the DLC, which will launch on October 20.

The first look at gameplay is as action-packed as you’d expect from Doom Eternal, with a few small changes. The Doom Slayer seems to have an upgraded grappling hook, allowing you to move horizontally parallel to a point instead of just towards it. There were also brief glimpses of new enemies that seem to be resurrected spirits, which fits into the heaven setting.

Some changes are far more pronounced, such as a massive creature that looks like a twisted Cyberdemon and the ability to ride a submarine. It’s all as outlandish as Doom has been since being rebooted. But if you’re still catching up on all the lore presented in the sequel, here’s everything you need to know.

As previously announced, the story follows after the events of Doom Eternal and addresses a conflict in heaven. That’s certainly a change of pace for the series, which often deals with the legions of hell. This is “Part 1” of the Ancient Gods story, suggesting at least one more episode will follow.

Bethesda also announced that Doom Eternal (along with Elder Scrolls Online) will come to PS5 and Xbox Series X., with free next-gen upgrades for those who own them on current-gen platforms. Catch up on all the big announcements from One Night Live right here.
