Twitch Bans Donald Trump To Prevent Him From Inciting "Further Violence"

Twitch has banned Donald Trump in order to prevent him from using the platform to incite “further violence.”

Twitch has taken the extraordinary step of banning Trump’s account. In an emailed statement to Kotaku, the online streaming platform wrote that the step was taken in order to prevent yesterday’s violence from escalating any further.

“In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel,” the spokesperson wrote. “Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President’s incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.”

Yesterday afternoon, a rowdy crowd of Trump supporters–some of them armed–stormed the Capital Building just as Congress had assembled to count the electoral college votes and certify Joe Biden’s victory as the next President of the United States. Instead, what can only be described as an armed insurrection prevented the count until later in the evening.

So far, four people were killed in yesterday’s violence. In order to prevent further violence and loss of life, both Facebook and Twitter temporarily banned President Trump’s account. The President had been using social media to at once ask his supporters to leave the capital while also showing his approval by calling them “very special people.”

Twitch has now followed suit by ensuring that anyone going to Trump’s page is greeted by the message that his account has been temporarily disabled.

“We are focused on minimizing harm leading up to the transition of government and will reassess his account after he leaves office,” the Twitch spokesperson added.

This is the second action Twitch has taken following yesterday’s riot. The first was to remove the popular PogChamp emote after its originator–Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez–made several controversial tweets regarding yesterday’s riot.

With Trump’s account disabled, one Twitch user is surprised to experience a sudden surge in subs. TrumpSC (real name Jeffrey Shih) is a former professional Hearthstone and Starcraft 2 player that just happened to include the word “Trump” in his screen name. Shih tweeted yesterday to set the record straight and inform his new followers he’s not the soon-to-be-former President and is just a former Hearthstone player-turned streamer.
