Tony Hawk Gets Into NFTs With The Sandbox Collaboration

Tony Hawk is coming to The Sandbox. The legendary skateboarder is teaming up with developer Autograph to create Tony Hawk LAND, a game within The Sandbox metaverse. Along with what’s being billed "the largest virtual skateboard ever made," Autograph will create NFTs for use on the platform based on Tony Hawk’s skateboards, equipment, and apparel.

For those who haven’t seen The Sandbox, it’s an online game platform that works a lot like Roblox. Both users and developers can "buy land" in The Sandbox to implement their own minigames, or they can create their own custom voxel assets to sell on The Sandbox’s internal market.

The selling point (for some, anyway) is that The Sandbox stores all these games and assets as NFTs on a blockchain, imparting creators with a sense of ownership that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Of course, that ownership really only matters when The Sandbox’s servers are working, and there’s a lot of baggage that comes along with NFTs that we’re just not going to get into.

Back to Tony Hawk LAND, The Sandbox says it’ll be a 6×6 area that will let users create their own custom skateparks to share with everyone else on the platform. The game will also include unlockable cosmetics based on Tony Hawk’s merch, "including the legendary skateboard Tony Hawk used to land the 900 at the X Games in 1999."

All those cosmetics can then be turned into 3D voxel avatars "that have in-game functionality for experiences, adding utility and value for their owners." You should also be able to take them out of Tony Hawk LAND and use them in other Sandbox games.

"I have been a fan of new technology all of my life — from the first videogames and home computers with CGI capabilities — so I am fascinated by the metaverse, and excited to bring our culture into the virtual landscape of The Sandbox," said Tony Hawk.

No word on when Tony Hawk LAND will launch, but The Sandbox says to stay tuned for more.
