Sonic The Hedgehog movie sequel slated for 2022 release
It’s only been five months since the Sonic The Hedgehog movie released and Paramount is confident the sequel will be out in two years.
With the Sonic The Hedgehog movie being such a financial success, it was hardly surprising to learn that Paramount Pictures had greenlit a sequel.
Director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are all returning and it’s safe to assume that Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, and Jim Carrey will come back to reprise the characters of Sonic, his human friend Tom, and mad scientist Dr. Robotnik.
According to Variety, Paramount has already set a release date for it, with the goal being to have it out on 8 April 2022.
That’s a couple of years away, but it’s a pretty confident move from Paramount as the film is in early development and there is still the current pandemic, which has been having an effect on every major film release.
Although the film received relatively mixed reviews from critics, it quickly broke box office records, even trumping Detective Pikachu’s opening weekend, and now stands as the highest grossing film based on a video game ever.
We personally found the film to be harmless and serviceable for children, though it barely resembles the games it is based on. A sequel could easily rectify that issue, especially with its post-credits sequence bringing in Sonic’s long-time fox friend Tails.
In terms of the games, Sega still has yet to announce its next mainline entry. With the series’ 30th anniversary happening next year, fans are hoping for something big or, at least, something better than Sonic Forces.
