Samurai Warriors 5 Will Have Up To 200 Enemies On Screen, But It’s Not The Priority
Anyone that has ever played a Warriors, or “Musou,” title will know how many enemies can appear on screen at once. Persona 5 Strikers had dozens, and yet that managed to be one of the most muted Warriors games. Samurai Warriors 5 is a traditional and explosive action game though, which is why you’ll be able to see up to 200 enemies on screen at once – but that’s not always the priority when making a game like this.
We recently had the chance to perform an email interview with Hisashi Koinuma, president of Koei Tecmo Games, and he told us about the process of creating an action game like Samurai Warriors 5, and where their priorities lie when it comes to creating these games.
What is the maximum number of enemies you can fit on screen in Samurai Warriors 5? Would you like even more enemies in the next game?
[Hisashi Koinuma] “It will change depending on the hardware, but roughly 150～200 enemies. While I think the number of enemies displayed on screen really adds to the sense of exhilaration you get from the game, there are other key elements to the game as well, so we consider how many enemies actually need to be displayed on screen at one time based on what the game calls for.”
We also asked Koinuma-san what the new consoles, such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X, offer a game franchise like Warriors, though his answer was more muted than we expected.
The PS5 is now on the market, do you intend to bring the Warriors series to this console in the near future?
[HK] “We don’t have any plans currently, but I’d like to keep track of the market for the PS5 and consider a potential PS5 version accordingly.”
Is there anything that the PS5 can do that you aren’t able to achieve on PS4 or Nintendo Switch?
[HK] “Other than the graphics processing and stable framerate, there aren’t really any other differences when playing on PS5.”
The news on the new consoles is a little bit underwhelming for anyone that was hoping to see a new Warriors title leveraging the power of the new systems, since the Nintendo Switch is still a target platform it’s probably for the best that the base level of graphical fidelity doesn’t increase too much and leave the Switch in the dirt.
Samurai Warriors 5 launches on June 24 on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, boasting all of the features you can see here.
