Sakura Wars Gets New Stage Musical (And It’s Too Cute)

Besides being a blockbuster video game series, Sakura Wars has crossed over to anime, manga, concerts, music LPs, and even full musical theatre productions. And now thanks to Avex Pictures, you can watch a condensed version of the latest theatre adaptation on YouTube.

Sakura Wars is no stranger to the stage. A regular annual production was put in from the mid-’90s to the mid-2000s during the height of the franchise’s popularity but has been more sporadic in recent years. An updated musical was originally set to debut in Japan back in March but was pushed back to November of 2020 due to COVID-19.

Now you can see a “digest” version of the play online. It hits all the major plot points of the original Sakura Wars, where a group of demon-hunting government operatives masquerades as a theatre troupe in order to avoid suspicion while they fight the forces of evil. It’s even subtitled in English so that new Western fans can follow along.

Sadly, there may not be too many of those around. Our own Bella Blondeau gave the recent reboot a failing grade in her review, calling the combat repetitive, the relationships creepy, and the storyline bland.

But she’s still a fan of the franchise even if the current game didn’t set her heart aflutter. You can get Sakura Wars out on PS4 now.
