Psychonauts 2 To Add Russian And Latin American Spanish Subtitles
It's been four months since Psychonauts 2 launched and Double Fine Productions has announced that the game is finally getting two new language options — Russian and Latin American Spanish. Both will be added as subtitles and in-game signage soon.
The developer dropped the announcement on socials, revealing that the new languages are coming in early 2022. It added that fans should stay tuned for more details. The studio also posted the announcement in Russian on its official Twitter page.
At launch, Psychonauts 2 officially supported only a handful of languages, including French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. This left many fans from other regions upset, and the title even got some negative reviews on Steam and Metacritic from the players who can't experience Raz's latest journey because of the language barrier.
Luckily, all the frustration — at least for Russian and Latin American players — will be over in just a few months. It's little compared to the 15-year gap between the first and second games. Sadly, Double Fine didn't provide the exact date for when the new options will be available.
The devs highlighted the issue with not too many languages being available at launch shortly before Psychonauts 2's arrival. According to community manager James Spafford, this is the largest game the studio has ever shipped, therefore, "adding even one extra language would take a lot of work and a lot of extra budget that [Double Fine] currently do not have." He added, "To add languages that use entirely different alphabets and have other considerations is an even bigger job still." It's a delight that the team will deliver at least these two new language options shortly next year and hopefully others will follow suit.
Psychonauts 2 is currently available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Game Pass — and is probably Phil Spencer's Game of the Year. Who cares if it didn't win The Game Awards 2021? It won Spencer's heart.
