PS5 and Xbox Series X games will be more expensive claims analyst
After NBA 2K21 became the first game to increase the price on next gen video games, the prediction is it won’t be the last.
It’s beginning to seem inevitable that next gen video games will be more expensive than their current gen equivalents, with analyst firm IDG Consulting claiming that NBA 2K21 is not an exception.
In announcing the game’s various versions this week, 2K revealed that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game would cost £59.99, with the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions priced at £64.99.
That’s the first and only time a next gen game has announced its price though, which makes it impossible to be sure whether this is an exception to the rule or a new standard. But speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, IDG boss Yoshio Osaki thinks the new price will become commonplace.
‘The last time that next gen launch software pricing went up was in 2005 and 2006, when it went from $49.99 to $59.99 at the start of the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation,’ he said.
He points out that other entertainment forms, such as movies and TV, have seen major price increases in that time and yet an extra £5 for video games is still less than increases for cinema ticket prices or Netflix subscriptions over the same time period.
Osaki also claims that next gen games are 200% to 300% times more expensive to make than in 2005, a percentage that is only likely to increase for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X generation.
‘IDG works with all major game publishers, and our channel checks indicate that other publishers are also exploring moving their next-gen pricing up on certain franchises, for the same reasons outlined above’, says Osaki.
‘Not every game should garner the $69.99 price point on next gen, but flagship AAAs such as NBA 2K merit this pricing more than others.’
It has hard to say though as nothing to do with NBA 2K21 is cheap and 2K has now revealed that you won’t get a free upgrade to the next gen version of the game, if you originally bought a current gen edition, unless you buy the expensive £84.99 Mamba Forever Edition.
