Pokémon Go won't work on iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or Android 5 after October

Anyone owning older iPhone or Android devices is going to discover that Pokémon Go no longer works after this month.

Pokémon Go has been going for over four years now and if you’ve been using the same phone to play it all that time there’s a good chance you’ll soon have to upgrade to a newer model.

Developer Niantic has announced that it’s ending support for devices using iOS 10, iOS 11, and Android 5, as well as the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 no matter what they’re running.

The change will come into effect in mid-October (there isn’t a specific date) when version 0.189 of the app is released. If your phone can update to a newer version of iOS or Android you’ll still be fine but if you’ve got an iPhone 5s and 6 there’s nothing you can do.

Once the new patch is released you won’t be able to play Pokémon Go or spend any of your PokéCoins, although they will remain on your account if you can log in via another device.

Niantic has offered no specific explanation except that removing support for older devices allows them to ‘streamline our development process and focus resources on supporting newer operating systems and technologies such as iOS 14’.

Android 5 isn’t limited to any specific device but it’s most common on the following: Google Nexus 10, HTC Desire 520, LG G Pro 2, Motorola Moto G (1st generation), Motorola Moto X (1st generation), Oppo R7s, Samsung Galaxy Note3, Samsung Galaxy E5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Alpha, Samsung Galaxy J1, Sony Xperia Z1, Sony Xperia Z, and Xiaomi MI 2.

Although Pokémon Go revolves around being outside it’s proven surprising adaptable to the pandemic, with recent updates making it easier to play indoors even during full lockdown.
