New Platinum Games title Babylon’s Fall is an instant flop on Steam
Things aren’t looking good for Babylon’s Fall, as it only manages to attract 650 players on PC at launch.
If you had forgotten Babylon’s Fall even existed, we honestly wouldn’t blame you. From the looks of it, you wouldn’t be the only one either as the newest PlatinumGames project is off to a rather dismal start.
The live service game launched on Thursday, March 3 and, according to SteamDB, only managed to attract a maximum of 650 players. By comparison, Outriders, another Square Enix published live service, peaked at 125,143 players at launch.
Avengers, which had the advantage of featuring Marvel characters, also did better at launch, peaking at 31,165 players. However, Square Enix sees Avengers as something of a failure, which means Babylon’s Fall is guaranteed to be considered the same.
It’s always possible Babylon’s Fall is performing better on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, since there are no player statistics for those consoles, but it seems unlikely.
There are virtually no reviews on Metacritic, suggesting that, like us, most websites were not sent review copies before launch – the clearest sign possible that the publisher has no confidence in the game’s quality.
The sole scored review for the PC version sees the TheGamer giving it a measly 1/5, calling Babylon’s Fall ‘a poor attempt at a cash grab that doesn’t even get that right – no one is going to want to spend money on it.’
There are a handful of positive user reviews on Steam, but there are just as many negative ones and even those who like the game admit its faults. One user describes the gameplay as phenomenal in the endgame but otherwise mediocre.
This all seems highly surprising given PlatinumGames’ reputation as one of the best action game developers in the industry, having been responsible for the likes of Bayonetta, Vanquish, and NieR:Automata.
They have no experience with live service games but that aspect doesn’t seem to be amongst the most serious issues. We’ll have a final review of the game next week.
Babylon’s Fall is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
