New Dead Space is a remake in the style of Resident Evil 2 claims latest rumour

Everyone seems convinced EA is working on a new Dead Space game but there’s disagreement over whether it’s a reboot or a remake.

When EA Play Live takes place later this month everyone will be expecting EA to announce a new Dead Space game, given all the rumours and circumstantial evidence that they’re preparing something.

There’s never been much agreement on what exactly the game is though and while the prevailing theory until now has been that it’s a reboot, not a direct sequel, the latest suggestion is that it’s actually a Resident Evil 2 story remake.

That comes from normally reliable VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, who supports previous claims that the game is being made by Star Wars: Squadrons developer EA Motive but suggests it’s actually a remake of the original 2008 game.

‘Like Resident Evil 2 Remake, expect the next Dead Space to use the original game as a strong foundation’, writes Grubb. ‘But it should also have modern visuals. And it will likely bring in new gameplay mechanics inspired by other entries in the franchise.’

Trying to mimic the success of Capcom certainly sounds like something EA would do, especially given the strong Resident Evil influences in the game already,

Interestingly, Grubb suggests that other than the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake the other major influence for EA is the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Prior to its release EA made multiple statements that implied they were drawing back from making single-player games and instead focusing on live service titles.

Fallen Order seems to have changed their mind, as well as the ongoing success of Sony’s many single-player exclusives, and while EA previously mandated that games such as the new Dragon Age must have live service elements they now proudly proclaim that they are single-player only.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the Dead Space remake won’t try to insert the co-op options from Dead Space 3 into the remake though, and indeed that may be what Grubb is referring to when he talks about ‘gameplay mechanics inspired by other entries in the franchise’.

The biggest problem for EA is that since Dead Space has none of the cheese or hamminess of Resident Evil it remains a gory and disturbing gameplay experience, that always had a relatively limited audience. Although presumably that’s an issue EA is already well aware of.
