Monkey Island Creator Is Now Teasing A Maniac Mansion Remaster

Game developer Ron Gilbert has been keeping busy this year. The Monkey Island creator has been hard at work on the anticipated Return to Monkey Island. While the game has yet to be released, it looks like Gilbert is already looking for his next project. A recent tweet seems to point to Maniac Mansion as being the next game on Gilbert’s list.

A recent Nintendo Direct Mini put the spotlight on Return to Monkey Island with the release of a new gameplay trailer. However, Gilbert’s attention seems to be elsewhere. The game developer kicked off July with an exciting tweet hinting at yet another of his fan-favorite titles getting an upgrade. On Friday, he tweeted out: “It would be fun to do a Maniac Mansion remaster that was the same story and setting but 50% new puzzles and maybe a new playable character."

He directed the tweet to fellow collaborator and lead game programmer for Return to Monkey Island David Fox. While Fox has yet to respond to the tweet, it sounds like a Maniac Mansion may be in the works from the two. Of course, nothing has been confirmed and it could just be Gilbert brainstorming on the social media platform.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Maniac Mansion is an adventure game from the late 1980s. It was developed and published by Lucasfilm Games with Gilbert on design and Fox as lead programmer. It follows teenager Dave Miller as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend from a mad scientist. It uses a point-and-click interface to guide the player through the titular mansion.

Of course, Gilbert and the crew need to get through the launch of Return to Monkey Island before they can focus on Maniac Mansion or whatever is next for them. Unfortunately, that is proving a bit tougher than expected, with recent backlash concerning the game’s art style. In fact, Gilbert has had to stop sharing news and information on the game as online harassment has proven too much.
