Mario Party 1 & 2 Coming To Nintendo Switch Online November 2

Both Mario Party and Mario Party 2 are coming to the Nintendo Switch, proving that the Japanese game developer has absolutely no regard for whether you maintain a healthy relationship with anyone ever again.

I'm not being alarmist when I say that Mario Party is the game that absolutely demolished friendships. I've seen people go from chummy acquaintances to brutal enemies in the blink of an eye after just two rounds of Mario Party. Mario Party 2 might have added some fun costumes and themed boards, but it didn't take away the intense spirit of competition that both games can instill in their players.

For those too young to have endured this torment, Mario Party first arrived on the N64 in 1998. It wasn't the first party game, but it was certainly the first party game to make party games feel like a distinct genre, allowing up to four players to sit on a couch and take part in over 50 mini-games on a quest to gather as many stars as possible. The player with the most stars at the end of a set number of turns wins.

Mario Party does have a single-player game mode and various unlockables that come with achieving certain gameplay goals, but the focus has always been playing with friends. It's something that was eventually expanded on in Super Mario Party for the Switch which finally added online multiplayer. Perhaps it was the proximity to your opponents that made the original Mario Party games so detrimental to friendships?

In any case, Mario Party and Mario Party 2 will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online’s N64 library for Expansion Pack owners on November 2. Mario Party 3 and Pokemon Stadium are coming Expansion Pack owners sometime in 2023.
