Geralt Actor Doug Cockle Says Witcher Netflix Writers Deviated "Severely" From Source Material
Doug Cockle, who has played Geralt since 2007 when CD Projekt Red launched the first Witcher game, has commented on the Netflix series casting shakeup following Henry Cavill's departure and the announcement of Liam Hemsworth taking over.
"Henry hasn't said it himself yet but the chat says that he's leaving because he doesn't agree with the storylines the writers have been developing and, if that's the case, I completely understand that because Henry is such a huge fan of the games and the books," Cockle said.
"And the writers on the Netflix series have chosen for whatever reason to deviate quite severely from the books and the games. Whether that's good or not is down to what you like. I personally don't understand the choice. I think that's why Henry's leaving. Liam, more power to him. I do not envy him. Big shoes to fill."
Interestingly enough, Doug Cockle has expressed his enjoyment of the show on Twitter in the past, writing in 2020, "Ok… finally saw all 8 episodes… LOVE IT. The time jumps are challenging, but it all comes together in the end. The main characters are wonderfully played by a talented cast and the world is lovingly realised. Bring on series 2!" It seems that, when series two did roll around, Cockle's view of the show changed, as this was the series that made the most changes from the source material.
Cockle has also expressed that he is a fan of Henry Cavill's take on Geralt several times. However, while he mentioned that the chat said Cavill left over creative differences, there's no official word from either party. Many speculate that it's because of just that, others speculate it was to take back the role of Superman which he has since lost, and some believe it to be a mix of both.
Liam Hemsworth taking over the role has already drawn a lot of backlash before anyone has even seen his take on Geralt, meaning that he not only has big shoes to fill, but an already angry audience to win over. Regardless, there's one more series with Henry Cavill before the shakeup happens.
