Final Fantasy 16 will be announced at PS5 Showcase on Wednesday claim rumours

A number of usually reliable sources suggest that the next Final Fantasy will announced this week, after its reveal was delayed from June.

Sony announced over the weekend that the next PlayStation 5 Showcase would be this week and already there are rumours of what it might feature, including the next mainline Final Fantasy.

Although it’s been four years since Final Fantasy 15 that isn’t a particularly long gap by the standards of the franchise, especially given that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series has only just begun.

Square Enix do always like to promote the series whenever a new generation comes around though and, not for the first time, rumours suggest that Final Fantasy 16 may be closer to being announced than many assumed.

Writing on ResetEra, VG247 Features Editor Alex Donaldson suggests that the plan at the start of the year was to have the reveal in June, but that was long ago abandoned thanks to the coronavirus.

Poster Navtra, who correctly predicted a number of this year’s game announcements, also agrees that the original plan was for a June reveal – but has no information on whether the game will now be announced on Wednesday.

Other posters in the same thread, who have demonstrated insider knowledge before, claim that Final Fantasy 16 is not an MMO, although one poster suggests it will feature multiplayer options – as an extension of the comrades feature in Final Fantasy 15.

Other circumstantial evidence includes what seems to be an official Twitter account for the game and the fact that Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto has retweeted the announcement of the PS5 showcase – something he usually only does if an event will feature one of his games.

At the very least there’s good reason to hope that an announcement might take place on Wednesday, even if there are no guarantees.

Although while it is true that Square Enix always likes to promote Final Fantasy during a console’s launch, especially a PlayStation console, they do already have Project Athia from many of the same developers that worked on Final Fantasy 15 – which could end up fulfilling the same role.
