Cyberpunk 2077 digital sales over 10 million despite refunds
Even with the negative reception and taking refunds into account, Cyberpunk 2077 has had the biggest digital launch of all time.
The now infamous release of Cyberpunk 2077 makes it an easy target of mockery and has severely hampered the reputation of studio CD Projekt.
However, that hasn’t stopped the game from becoming a major financial success for the studio. In fact, new data says that Cyberpunk 2077 had the biggest digital launch of all time.
It had been previously reported that it took the record of fastest-selling PC game and, at the time, 74% of its sales were digital.
According to SuperData, CD Projekt has managed to push 10.2 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077 altogether and that’s even taking refunds into account.
With 80% of digital sales being for the PC version (which is widely perceived to be the best version of the game), SuperData adds that PC games revenue jumped 40% thanks to Cyberpunk 2077’s release.
The game’s success can be credited to CD Projekt’s marketing, as well as the positive reputation it earned following The Witcher 3’s release.
While Cyberpunk 2077 was the highest earning PC game of December 2020, it came third in the console rankings, losing out to Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and NBA 2K21.
This can likely be attributed to the game’s poor performance on console and it being removed from the PlayStation Store. There’s currently still no word on when it will be added back.
As noted by SuperData, the financial success is only short-term and CD Projekt will need to invest resources into fixing the game (which it has been doing, with the first major patch releasing recently) and its public image.
The company is facing two separate lawsuits from its own investors, is under the close eye of the Polish government, and analysts even think that it could be sold off entirely.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Stadia. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are planned to release this year.
