Animal Crossing: New Horizons Could Be Getting A Mario Crossover In March
It’s never a dull moment in Animal Crossing: New Horizons – it’s possible that one of the many things lined up is a Super Mario crossover event happening in March. Whilst it hasn’t been outright confirmed by Nintendo, the recently-released update video implies it pretty heavily.
A collab between Animal Crossing and Mario would certainly make sense as a final blow-out for Nintendo’s 35th anniversary celebrations for the Mario franchise. The Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary ongoing event has been rolling since September last year, and is scheduled to draw to a close at the end of March this year.
Nintendo released a video detailing the latest free New Horizons update – which officially kicked off yesterday, January 28. At the end of the vid, you can see two unmistakably familiar icons from Mario – the red Super Mushroom, and the Super Star. Accompanying those is text which reads, “Next free update scheduled for March.” That’s pretty clear, right?
It would also make sense if the update landed around March 10 – or MAR10 – which is of course, Mario Day. Unlike usual, fans of the longstanding franchise will have to celebrate the day at home and socially-distanced, so having a little Mario surprise on New Horizons islands would warm the hearts of many around the world.
This won’t be the only Nintendo crossover happening in March, either. From March 26, you’ll be able to buy Sanrio Collaboration amiibo cards exclusively from Target. Each of the six unique cards represent a Sanrio character: Hello Kitty, Pompompurin, Kiki and Lala, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and Keroppi. On the cards are also six villagers you’ll recognize from Animal Crossing: New Leaf: Rilla, Marty, Étoile, Chai, Chelsea, and Toby. The pack will cost you $5.99.
As we wait to see what form the New Horizons x Mario crossover takes, we’ll at least have the Festivale event to tide us over. This will be happening on February 15, and will feature another familiar face – Pavé the showy peacock. You’ll be able to trade colorful feathers with him in exchange for some new furniture. Or more importantly, a fancy dance.
