Florida Mayhem announce 2021 roster, three new players – Daily Esports
After a lot of hyping it up in the Overwatch League, another team has announced their roster for next season. The Florida Mayhem have revealed their 2021 roster, including new teammates Min-seok “OGE” Son, Sung-jun “SLIME” Kim and Seung-hun “Checkmate” Baek. The other players are returning ones, not surprising fans with their consistent play throughout the previous season. This full roster now consists of these three new players, along with Jun-ki “Yaki” Kim, Nam-jin “Gangnamjin” Kang, Beom-jun “Gargoyle” Lee, and Sang-bum “BQB” Lee. Looking to still improve over their rise since season one, the Mayhem aren’t pulling any punches with these signings.
OGE and Slime’s history
These two players are more commonly known due to their past both in and out of the Overwatch League. Starting with OGE, he’s played for two teams in the league before joining Florida. Starting with the Dallas Fuel, he showed moments of skill, but the team cohesion was clearly causing issues. Even after staying with Dallas for their second season, improvement wasn’t happening there. He decided to move to the Los Angeles Gladiators, where the team looked strong on paper. However, much like Dallas, the team underperformed and disappointed, leaving OGE going into free agency. Fans were wondering who’d pick him up, and Florida saw the talent and took him.
Slime is a more interesting pickup than OGE. While never regarded as the best main support, success has followed Slime wherever he’s gone. Of course, he was on the dominant RunAway team that became the original Vancouver Titans. But, when the team disbanded, Slime moved to the Seoul Dynasty. Again, despite an iffy regular season, he did lead them to the Grand Finals. Despite losing to the Shock, Seoul surprised many, and Slime was a good example of how they got there. Picking him up to work alongside this Korean team makes sense, and Florida got a steal.
Since mid-2019, Checkmate has been in both Pacific and Korean contenders. Primarily for Battlica, he proved his skills on the flex DPS role and helped lead the team to many upset wins. This was especially clear in their week 3 upset over Element Mystic back in May. After finishing fourth in the first season of 2020 contenders, he moved to OZ Gaming for the second. While they didn’t finish high that season, Checkmate was one of their highlight players, and Florida must’ve saw that.
Florida’s 2021 roster set
Along with the players they’ve kept, these signings are spot on for what fans expected: a couple veterans to help the younger players improve alongside another young DPS prospect to help flexibility. While OGE hasn’t hit those highs yet, he has shown moments of brilliance over his three seasons in the league. Slime is consistent, and has proven to bring success to teams with his track record. Lastly, Checkmate is a great young prospect who can fill in the holes the team has DPS-wise. To put it simply, Florida still looks like a great team for 2021.
