Amazon Is Price-Matching GameStop's Latest Sale On Switch Games And More

GameStop has been having back-to-back sales recently, including a massive Game Days sale that launched this Sunday just as its Fourth of July sale ended. The Game Days sale is one of the best ones we’ve seen at GameStop all year, offering steep discounts on first-party Switch games along with PS4 and Xbox One games. But if you prefer to shop at Amazon, you can take advantage of some of the same deals there, as the mega-retailer is price-matching many of GameStop’s best game deals.

Notably, you can nab first-party Switch games Super Mario Maker 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for $40 each. These are selling out fast–Splatoon 2’s discount ended as I was writing this up–so we recommend grabbing anything that catches your eye today. These titles don’t get much cheaper than this, and they’re rarely this low outside of events like Black Friday. Some Switch deals have already sold out at Amazon, but you can still find Splatoon 2, Mario Tennis Aces, and Yoshi’s Crafted World for $40 each at GameStop.

The sale also includes the recent 2K Switch ports that launched on Switch this May. Normally $50 each, you can already save $10 each on physical Switch copies of BioShock: The Collection, XCOM 2 Collection, and Borderlands: Legendary Collection, now $40 a copy. Check out more of the best deals Amazon is price-matching this week below.

BIG take over No. 1 spot in HLTV's world rankings

This is quite an achievement for the German scene.

German CS:GO team BIG have become the top-ranked squad in the world for the first time, according to HLTV’s world rankings.

Their rank was updated today following the end of the second Regional Major Ranking (RMR) tournament of the year for Europe and North America, cs_summit six. BIG beat Vitality in the grand finals 3-2, even though they started with one map disadvantage due to coming from the lower bracket.

TabseN, XANTARES, tiziaN, syrson, and k1t0 have all seemingly peaked since June. They also won DreamHack Masters Spring Europe, where they beat G2 in the grand finals.

BIG only hold a slight advantage over Vitality, the second-best CS:GO team in the world, according to HLTV. The Germans have 851 points, three more than Vitality. BIG have gone up six positions since June 15, which was the last time that HLTV updated its rankings before today.

BIG have overcome a bit of a slump in 2020 after they didn’t even come close to winning an important tournament in 2019. This lineup has been playing together since Jan. 1, when k1to and syrson left Sprout to join tabseN and crew. The roster change paid off right away since BIG won DreamHack Open Leipzig in January and earned a slot to compete in DreamHack Masters Spring Europe.

“What an achievement,” tabseN said. “For me [personally] it means the world to be able to climb to #1.” The 25-year-old has been the best German CS:GO player for years and part of the CS:GO community doubted that he was capable of reaching the top with BIG.

Here are the top 10 CS:GO teams in the world, according to HLTV’s rankings.

  1. BIG
  2. Vitality
  3. Evil Geniuses
  4. Natus Vincere
  5. G2
  6. Fnatic
  7. FaZe
  8. Team Liquid
  9. FURIA
  10. Astralis

Kingdoms Of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Pre-Order Guide–All Bonuses And Editions (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

A fantastic action-RPG from 2012 will soon make its way onto modern consoles: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (now dubbed Re-Reckoning) will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC this August. The Kingdoms of Amalur remaster has now officially been announced by publisher THQ Nordic, although multiple listings appeared prior to the announcement on online storefronts like Xbox Live and Amazon. You can grab your copy on August 18.

Originally released on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was generally well-received and earned a 7.5/10 in GameSpot’s Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning review for its top-notch combat, flexible character advancement, and extensive world, although former reviews editor Kevin VanOrd noted its overall generic world and story.

“In the future, when you talk about Kingdoms of Amalur, the first thing you will probably mention is how fun the battles were,” he wrote back in 2012. “Incredibly, this RPG’s combat is so exciting, it could have been used in a pure action game and would have held up just fine. In fact, from a swordplay, loot, and leveling perspective, Kingdoms of Amalur is as good as any RPG in recent memory. This is the role-playing game you should be playing if excellent action and progression are your primary concern.”

Despite its popularity, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was surrounded by drama when its original developer, 38 Studios, declared bankruptcy and shut down, eventually leading its home state of Rhode Island to sue the studio’s founder over a controversial $75 million loan. In September 2018, THQ Nordic acquired the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur, although the company confirmed to Eurogamer at the time that Electronic Arts still holds publishing rights, requiring EA’s approval for a remaster.

Whether you played the original RPG or are just hearing about Kingdoms of Amalur, the remaster will be the perfect chance to return to Amalur or explore it for the first time with improved visuals, refined gameplay, and all DLC unlocked. If you’re interested in securing your copy early, check out where you can pre-order Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning below, including its Collector’s edition.

Pre-order Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning standard edition | $40

Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is currently available to pre-order for PS4, Xbox One, and PC for $40 on Amazon. While there is a placeholder listing for the Kingdoms of Amalur remaster on Xbox Live, you can’t actually pre-order yet on that platform. The standard edition will include all DLC from the game’s original release. This game is also supported by Amazon’s pre-order price guarantee, so if the price drops at any time before release, you’ll be charged the lowest amount when it ships.

Pre-order Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Collector’s edition | $100-$110

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning has a pricier Collector’s edition, a nice option for longtime fans of the game. The Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Collector’s edition will include the base game and all DLC as well as an Alyn Shir collectible statue, an Amalur keychain, a copy of the original soundtrack, and five Amalur artworks. It’ll cost you $110 to own on PS4 or Xbox One and $100 on PC. It’s currently sold out, though it’s likely to come back in stock ahead of launch.

[Last Chance] Destiny 2 Red-Hot Iron Quest Guide: Here's How To Get The Forward Path And Fool's Remedy Fast

The Iron Banner has returned to Destiny 2 for the first time in the Season of Arrivals, and sports a new quest that’ll unlock two re-issued weapons for your arsenal. Those guns are The Forward Path, an auto rifle, and The Fool’s Remedy, a sidearm, and both have interesting perks you’ll want to check out. To get them, you’ll need to complete the new Red-Hot Iron quest from Lord Saladin in the Tower. The first Iron Banner event of the season ends at the weekly reset on Tuesday, July 7, so get to work if you want to grab the guns without having to wait for the next opportunity.

The quest requires some grinding to get the guns, but it’s actually really quick. There’s only one step–here’s how to knock out Red-Hot Iron quickly and efficiently.

Old Reliables

Defeat opponents with Sidearms (25) and Auto Rifles (25).

This step is just your standard kill-getter, but your choice of guns will help. First, you want to try to earn precision kills for quicker progress. For auto rifles, guns like SUROS Regime, Hard Light, and Gnawing Hunger are favorites that’ll get the job done pretty quickly. Sidearms are more of a dealer’s choice situation, but three-round burst models like Last Hope or full-auto options are pretty solid, and the charged-up shot of Devil’s Ruin can be effective as well.

The trick with earning kills with sidearms is not to rely on them. The guns can sometimes be reliable kill-getters, but more often than not, you’ll want to soften your target up with your primary weapon and the switch to your sidearm to finish them off–primary weapons like grenade launchers are great for this. It’s also effective to run in groups with your teammates, letting them whittle down targets so you can hit them with your sidearm for the assisted final blow.

Return to Lord Saladin when you’ve racked up all your kills. The good news is that you’ll get all the rewards in one go when you turn in the quest, including both weapons. You might want to turn in tokens for packages with Saladin once you have the guns unlocked, as you can get random rolls for both The Forward Path and The Fool’s Remedy.

Ubisoft Forward: Date, Stream Start Time, Free Watch Dogs 2 Offer, And More

Ubisoft’s upcoming livestream, Ubisoft Forward, is set to go live on July 12 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET. There will be a 30-minute pre-show before the main event, tons of reveals for titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion, free giveaways during the presentation, and more. Here’s what else you can expect from Ubisoft Forward this Sunday.

Game Reveals, Announcements, And “Other Surprises”

According to a blog post, the main showcase will be packed with announcements concerning highly anticipated titles. This includes Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the recently revealed Hyper Scape, Watch Dogs: Legion, and more. A line-up reveal posted to YouTube confirms the livestream will feature several other games in Ubisoft’s catalog as well, such as The Crew and Trackmania.

Among the many games that will be discussed during Ubisoft Forward, the studio confirmed that very specific news about some games will be revealed. The long-awaited AI Squadmates update for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint will finally be talked about, as well as a deep-dive into The Division 2 easter eggs, additional Just Dance 2020 news, and more. Currently, it’s unclear if previously-announced titles–Gods & Monsters, Rainbow Six Quarantine, Roller Champions, and others–will make an appearance. However, Ubisoft did say “a few other surprises” will be unveiled.

Ubisoft Forward Start Times, Where To Watch

Ubisoft Forward will go live on Sunday, July 12 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET, with a pre-show happening 30 minutes before. Check the image below to see the exact start time in your respective region.

Ubisoft Forward Start Times

  • Pre-Show: 11:30 AM PT / 2:30 PM ET / 4:30 PM AEST / 8:30 PM CEST
  • Main Show: 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET / 5 PM AEST / 9 CEST

Get Watch Dogs 2 On PC For Free

Ubisoft has also confirmed that you can get a free copy of Watch Dogs 2 during Ubisoft Forward. All you have to do is login to your Uplay account after the Trackmania playthrough and before the show concludes to claim Watch Dogs 2 on PC. There will also be additional rewards you can earn during the livestream by participating in trivia questions. Answering them correctly will net you various in-game items across some of Ubisoft’s games, though the studio didn’t specify which games exactly.

Embroiled In Controversy

Despite Ubisoft Forward–which was announced in response to the cancellation of E3 2020 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic–continuing as planned, the studio has been hit with an assortment of allegations in recent weeks. AC Valhalla creative director Ashraf Ismail stepped down following infidelity allegations, company executive Maxime Beland resigned after being accused of abuse and assault, and other employees who have been reported have been suspended in the wake of rising allegations. It’s unclear if product and brand marketing manager Andrien Gbinigie, who was accused of sexual assault, still works at Ubisoft Toronto, the studio currently finishing up Watch Dogs: Legion.

As a result of the recent allegations against a number of Ubisoft employees at all levels of the company, studio founder and CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed a “structural shift” is coming. Guillemot outlined a series of steps Ubisoft intends to implement in the wake of the company’s #MeToo moment, from appointing a “Head of Workplace Culture” to establishing a diversity board that will review and improve the company’s policies and procedures.

Ubisoft VP resigns following assault allegations

Maxime Béland, a former creative director and editorial vice president at Ubisoft Toronto, has resigned from his position following assault allegations published on social media. A Kotaku report, published Monday, detailed the allegations against Béland.

Ubisoft confirmed Béland’s resignation in a statement emailed to Polygon:

Maxime Beland, Vice President Editorial, has resigned from his role at Ubisoft, effective immediately. Despite his resignation, we continue to investigate the allegations made against him. Additionally, effective as of yesterday, Tommy François, Vice President Editorial & Creative Services, has been placed on disciplinary leave pending the outcome of an investigation. One other individual in our Toronto studio has been terminated for engaging in behaviors that do not align with what is expected of Ubisoft employees. Other investigations are ongoing and will be conducted rigorously.

Ubisoft will not tolerate workplace misconduct and will continue taking disciplinary actions against anyone who engages in harassment, discrimination and other behaviors that infringe on our Code of Fair Conduct.

Kotaku spoke with 12 current and former employees about Béland and the culture of Ubisoft, which the sources described as “normaliz[ing] sexism and harassment” and “undervalu[ing] women’s contributions.” It also spoke with the woman who had alleged that Béland “put his hands around her neck and squeezed.” Béland’s wife, Rima Brek, was also reportedly interim head of human resources. Inaction on the part of Ubisoft HR appeared to be an ongoing, structural problem within the company, according to Kotaku’s report.

On July 2, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot published a letter on the company’s website that was sent to employees. In the letter, titled “Change Starts Today,” Guillemot said he would “revise the composition of the Editorial Department, transform our human resource processes, and improve the accountability of all managers on these subjects.” He detailed the steps the company will take to address the culture problems, including appointing a Head of Workplace Culture and investigating all allegations.

Dormant Battletoads Reboot Might Be Nearing Release

Games enthusiasts of a certain age still bear the scars from the infamous speeder bike levels of the original Battletoads, and you might be able to test your skills again soon. The Battletoads reboot that was first announced back at E3 2018 is finally showing signs of life, with Gematsu noting that the game recently appeared on Brazil’s state-run rating board. Typically, games don’t receive ratings from such agencies unless they’re relatively close to launch.

Originally slated for a 2019 release, the Battletoads reboot is under development by Dlala Studios, under the supervision of Rare. It would be the first entry in the series since the Battletoads arcade game from 1994, which never made its way to consoles of the day. The new game was first teased when the three Battletoads–Rash, Zitz, and Pimple–were added to the indie sensation Shovel Knight in 2015.

Like previous games in the series, the new Battletoads belongs to the beat ’em up or brawler genre, and there have been several other attempts to bring back the glory of that arcade era in recent years. The retro-sequel to Sega’s beloved Streets of Rage series garnered positive reviews from critics and fans alike, with our critic Heidi Kemps rating it an 8/10 in GameSpot’s Streets of Rage 4 review.

PlayStation Plus subscribers be warned: this is your final chance to download the free PS4 games for June 2020.

The next batch of PS Plus free games have a July 7 release date on PS4. There’s no official launch time, but the new games should be available at around midday.

The new games include NBA 2K20, as well as Rise of the Tomb Raider. As a special anniversary bonus, PS Plus subscribers can also download Erica.

It’s also worth pointing out that PlayStation Plus members can grab a ten-year anniversary theme for the PS4.

If you haven’t already downloaded the June 2020 free PS4 games, then you really should, because they’re pretty good.

The outgoing PS Plus games include Call of Duty WW2 and Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the pick of the bunch for July 2020, although NBA 2K20 is also a decent game.

“NBA 2K has evolved into much more than a basketball simulation,” reads the PlayStation Blog description.

“With its immersive open-world Neighborhood, NBA 2K20 is a platform for gamers and ballers to come together and create what’s next in basketball culture.

“Take your skills to the next level, featuring an upgraded motion engine with signature styles, advanced shooting controls, a new dribble size-up system, refined off-ball collisions, and a new read & react defensive game.”

While NBA 2K20 was praised for the action on the court, fans and critics weren’t as happy with all of the in-game microtransactions and gambling mechanics.

Rise of the Tomb Raider, meanwhile, shifts the action to Siberia, where Lara Croft uncovers a lost city and ancient mystery.

Sitting pretty with a Metacritic score of 88%, the game boasts some of the best visuals on the PS4. It also features a smattering of excellent puzzle tombs, as well as some fantastic action set-pieces.

“Featuring epic, high-octane action moments set in the most beautifully hostile environments on earth, Rise of the Tomb Raider delivers a cinematic survival action adventure where you will join Lara Croft on her first tomb raiding expedition.

“Explore Awe-Inspiring Deadly Tombs – Huge ancient spaces littered with deadly traps, solve dramatic environmental puzzles, and decipher ancient texts to reveal crypts as you take on a world filled with secrets to discover.”

Then there’s Erica, which is a cinematic game with live action visuals and multiple endings.

The game can actually be controlled using iOS and Android smartphones, making it one of the more unique experiences available on PS4.

If you want to get your hands on the June and July free PS4 games, then you should hurry and take advantage of this mega PS Plus deal today.

ShopTo is currently selling a 12-month PlayStation Plus membership for just £39.85. That’s a saving of 20%.

As a digital membership, the PS Plus subscription will be delivered immediately, which means you can use it to bag both sets of PS Plus games.

If you’re thinking of checking out PS Plus but don’t want to commit to the full year, then you might want to try CD Keys instead.

At the time of writing, CD Keys is selling 3 month PlayStation Plus subscriptions for just £16.99.

It’s worth pointing out that this deal is currently only available to fans in the UK, although similar deals are available for customers in other regions.

We Regret To Inform You That JK Rowling Is Tweeting Again

Harry Potter creator JK Rowling has become known for creating controversy around her thoughts on gender and transsexuality. In a weekend tweetstorm, the author once again stepped into a contentious topic by signal-boosting and then defending a tweet criticizing hormone treatments and the “pure laziness” of the medical professionals who prescribe them.

This time it began when Rowling liked a tweet criticizing hormone treatments as “the new antidepressants” (via The AV Club) and saying they’re overprescribed. A backlash started to surface online, and Rowling replied in a lengthy tweet thread.

“I’ve ignored fake tweets attributed to me and RTed widely. I’ve ignored porn tweeted at children on a thread about their art. I’ve ignored death and rape threats. I’m not going to ignore this,” she began. Her replies took exception to people suggesting that the original tweet had criticized the patients themselves as lazy when instead that criticism was pointed at doctors, but she went on to share her more general thoughts about the purported risks of overprescribing hormone treatments and surgery.

Most recently, Rowling caused controversy when she asserted that biological sex is an immutable law of nature. That caused enough of a stir that it prompted a response from actor Daniel Radcliffe and has reportedly caused discomfort among developers of an upcoming Harry Potter game. Meanwhile the Harry Potter fan community has been distancing itself from Rowling.
