Pokemon Kubfu Guide: How To Evolve Into Urshifu And Which Form Is Better In Isle Of Armor

The centerpiece of Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Isle of Armor expansion is a new storyline that centers around Kubfu, a brand-new Legendary Pokemon that you’ll receive after you complete all three of the Master Dojo’s trials. Unlike most other Legendary Pokemon, Kubfu is actually able to evolve, and its evolution, Urshifu, can take one of two forms: Single Strike or Rapid Strike.

However, evolving Kubfu is a bit more involved than it may initially seem, and Urshifu’s two possible forms each have their own strengths and drawbacks. To help you decide which one to choose, we’ve put together this guide explaining how to evolve Kubfu and how its two evolutions compare. Isle of Armor story spoilers follow.

How To Evolve Kubfu

After you complete the Master Dojo’s three trials, Mustard will gift you the Legendary Pokemon Kubfu. To evolve it, you’ll need to challenge one of the Towers of Two Fists, but before you can do that, you’ll need to increase your friendship with Kubfu. Fortunately, this is much simpler than the usual methods of improving friendship with your Pokemon.

After you receive Kubfu, Mustard will mark down several areas on your map that have great views. You’ll need to visit a couple of these and speak to a dojo member at each to max out your friendship with Kubfu. It doesn’t matter which viewpoints you visit, so you have some flexibility over how you approach this trial. Once you’ve visited the areas and become best friends with Kubfu, return to Mustard and you’ll earn the right to challenge either the Tower of Darkness or the Tower of Waters.

Each tower consists of five battles, but you can only select one of them to challenge, so think carefully before you begin. Your Kubfu will need to be at least level 70 to gain access to the tower, and it must be the only Pokemon in your party for the challenge. After you defeat the first four trainers, your final battle will be against Mustard, who uses his own Kubfu.

Your Kubfu will evolve differently depending on which of the two towers you challenge. If you complete the Tower of Darkness, it will evolve into Single Strike Urshifu, a Dark/Fighting type; if you complete the Tower of Waters, it will evolve into Rapid Strike Urshifu, a Water/Fighting type.

Which Kubfu Evolution Is Better?

Both Single Strike and Rapid Strike forms of Urshifu have the exact same Ability–Unseen Fist–and base stats, so neither is more powerful than the other. The biggest difference between the two forms is their potential movesets. Although they can learn many of the same attacks, Single Strike Urshifu is able to learn a handful of Dark-type attacks, including the signature move Wicked Blow. This attack deals damage and always results in a critical hit unless the opposing Pokemon has an Ability that prevents crits, such as Battle Armor or Shell Armor.

Similarly, Rapid Strike Urshifu is able to learn a handful of Water-type attacks. This form’s signature move is Surging Strikes, a multi-hit attack that strikes opponents three times. Although each hit has a fairly low base power, all three strikes are always critical hits unless the opposing Pokemon has the aforementioned Abilities.

Ultimately, which Urshifu you should choose comes down to personal preference. Single Strike Urshifu’s biggest drawback is its 4x weakness to Fairy Pokemon, which are fairly prevalent in competitive play, although it gains immunity from Psychic types. Meanwhile, Rapid Strike Urshifu’s Water typing opens up weaknesses to Grass and Electric Pokemon. Another point to keep in mind is that Water/Fighting is a less common type combination than Dark/Fighting. The only other Water/Fighting Pokemon is Poliwrath, while Pangoro and Scrafty share Single Strike Urshifu’s typing.

How To Get Gigantamax Urshifu

Both forms of Urshifu are capable of Gigantamaxing, although they won’t have that ability innately. As with your Galar starter, you’ll need to teach Urshifu how to Gigantamax, but you can’t simply feed it a regular Max Soup as you can other Pokemon; you need an additional ingredient for the dish called Max Honey.

Max Honey can only be obtained after defeating a Dynamax Vespiquen raid. You’ll be tasked with battling one on Honeycalm Island as part of Isle of Armor’s story. After you’ve obtained the Max Honey, you’ll need to combine it with three cluster of Max Mushrooms to create a special Max Soup that will give Urshifu the ability to Gigantamax.

Kubfu isn’t the only new Pokemon you can evolve in Isle of Armor; you can also evolve Galarian Slowpoke into Galarian Slowbro, a brand-new regional variant that comes with a unique Ability called Quick Draw and an exclusive Poison-type attack called Shell Side Arm. The Isle of Armor expansion also gives you the ability to teach certain Pokemon how to Gigantamax thanks to a special dish called Max Soup.

If you’ve just picked up a Sword or Shield Expansion Pass, here’s how to access the Isle of Armor. You’ll also receive an early purchase bonus for getting it before August 31: new clothing items based on Leon’s cap and tights. Here’s how to claim those. Ghost Recon Breakpoint Update Introduces Gunsmith Changes, Full Patch Notes Detailed

The biggest change to Ghost Recon: Breakpoint’s weapons with TU 2.1.0 is the addition of new fire rates. Instead of SMGs only having the option to switch between burst- and automatic fire, some guns in the category will now be able to use single-fire and full-auto. The same can be said of certain ASRs. The full list of ASRs and SMGs that have access to these new fire rates are listed below:

SMGs with Single-fire/Full-auto

  • MP5
  • MP7
  • MPX
  • Scorpion EVO3 CQC
  • Scorpion EVO3
  • UMP
  • Echelon SMG
  • Vector
  • Vector Shorty

Elsewhere in the Gunsmith are new muzzles and scopes for certain guns such as the 416 Shorty, MP5, LMGs like CTMMG and Stoner, and many others. The position of grips on assault rifles, submachine guns, and shotguns has been moved closer to the muzzle for better control and feedback. There are other additions to Gunsmith as well, including weapon attachments (like the GL M203 Grenade Launcher attachment) that can be used on more weapons (such as 416 Shorty) and more.

TU 2.1.0 also packages a bunch of bug fixes and game improvements. This includes fixes issues with rewards not unlocking after conditions were met, ironing out technical issues that result in disappearing weapon models, and more.

Ubisoft’s E3-style presentation is set to go live on Sunday, July 12 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET. The studio is expected to unveil information about games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6, and Watch Dogs: Legion. Ubisoft will also discuss Ghost Recon: Breakpoint’s long-anticipated AI Squadmates update, as well as “a few other surprises.”

BoxVR Studio FitXR Raises $7.5M Investment to Grow VR Fitness

The Entire VR Industry in One Little Email

The Daily Roundup is our comprehensive coverage of the VR industry wrapped up into one daily email, delivered directly to your inbox.

FitXR, the studio behind VR fitness app BoxVR, today announced that it has raised $7.5 million to expand its operations and VR fitness offerings.

Following its first raise of $1.25 million at the end of 2018, FitXR has just added another $7.5 million worth of runway to its VR fitness aspirations. The total comes in the form of a $6.3 million Series A investment and a $1.2 million loan through a government-based UK innovation fund.

The Series A investment was led by Hiro Capital; the fund has also invested in VR startup LIV which focuses on mixed reality capture for VR experiences (including BoxVR). BoostVC, Maveron, and TenOneTen Ventures also participated in the round.

Available on Oculus Quest, Rift, Steam, and PSVR, the $30 BoxVR app is presently the company’s only product offering. It’s a rhythm-based boxing game designed specifically for fitness. Its track-based levels—which include punching, crouching, leaning, and blocking—range from the length of a typical song to longer endurance-focused levels going as long as 60 minutes.

FitXR says it plans to use its latest investment to expand its European and North American operations, and to “accelerate [the] launch of several exciting new products and services for people to keep fit in virtual reality.”

While BoxVR is currently structured as a one-time purchase (with optional DLC), we wouldn’t be surprised to see this investment used to transition the app (or its successor) to a subscription-based model to capitalize on recent digital fitness trends and the app’s never-ending replayability.

Competing VR fitness app Supernatural made waves earlier this year as the first VR fitness app to be fully built around a subscription model.

While BoxVR doesn’t have the same popularity as, say, Beat Saber, the latest investment suggests that the app is seeing promising usage metrics (like consistent usage and long sessions) that have investors excited.

Reviews editor Kallie Plagge praised the game for the ways in which it rewards you “in practical ways as well as emotional ones, driving home the positive impact of what you do for others.”

“[Death Stranding is] positive without ignoring pain; in fact, it argues in both its story and its gameplay that adversity itself is what makes things worth doing and life worth living,” she wrote. “It’s a game that requires patience, compassion, and love, and it’s also one we really need right now.”

Blizzard removing fee to change gender in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

Character customization is a major initiative for Blizzard in World of Warcraft’s upcoming expansion, Shadowlands. But Blizzard is also changing some fundamental customization systems, most notably the ability to change your gender for free and at will.

In modern World of Warcraft, players interested in changing their character’s gender need to purchase a $15 appearance change on the Blizzard store. This is different from an in-game race change, and only allows players to change their gender or redo all their character customization at once.

Players who want to redo their hair and other aspects of their character can go to the in-game barber shop, located in most major cities in World of Warcraft. Starting in Shadowlands, players will be able to change their gender at these barber shops as well.

Executive producer John Hight revealed the change in an interview with Eurogamer.

“A long time ago, we had the ability for players to go in — it was actually a paid service — and change their character. Much of that is now in the barber shop in the game,” said Hight. “And as we were adding things up in Shadowlands, we realized, ‘Gosh the only way you can change your gender in World of Warcraft is to go through this paid service.’ And we felt like that’s not the right message.”

Hight went on to tell Eurogamer that this is not a change the studio can easily patch into the game, which is why players will need to wait for Shadowlands to be able to change their character’s gender for free.

Blizzard announced its plan to open the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands beta in mid-July, and said it will launch Shadowlands this fall. The studio also spoke about in-game Covenants, and we got a chance to check out the endgame zone, The Maw.

It’s finally July, which means Amazon Prime members have a new round of free games to claim this month via Twitch Prime. Twitch Prime comes with any Amazon Prime subscription, so if you’re paying for fast and free shipping from Amazon, you should also be snagging free PC games every month.

Five more games are free to claim as of July 1: Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, Dear Esther, Grip: Combat Racing, Kunai, and Dark Devotion. To claim them, you simply need to link your Twitch account to your Amazon Prime account.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is a classic first-person shooter that originally released on Nintendo 64 in 1998. While it’s certainly dated now, Turok 2 was a beloved FPS of the era, so you may be interested in checking out a relic from the past.

Grip: Combat Racing is a fast-paced combat racer that takes cues from Wipeout and Star Wars podracing games. It features 30 unique vehicles and 29 tracks scattered across four locales. In Kunai, you play as a sentient tablet with ninja skills who embarks on platforming quest to stop an evil A.I.

Dark Devotion is also a side-scroller, but, as the name suggests, it’s quite a bit darker. A cross between roguelikes and Metroidvanias, Dark Devotion is a challenging action game with a gorgeous art style. And in Dear Esther, you explore a deserted island while listening to letters written by a widower.

The July freebies join the classic SNK games that are up for grabs until the end of year. More than 20 SNK games will eventually be free on Twitch Prime, but as of right now you can grab seven, including Fatal Fury Special, The King of Fighters 2000, and Pulstar. There are also a few bonus freebies from June that will be available into July, including Dream Daddy, PictoQuest, Mad Tracks, and Reus.

In addition to free games, Twitch Prime members also get free loot for a wide variety of games. In July, new loot drops are arriving for games such as Apex Legends, Black Desert Online, and Legends of Runeterra.

Shantae Dev's Mystery Switch Project Is A Bakugan Game

While the primary focus of Nintendo’s Treehouse Live July 2020 stream was Paper Mario: The Origami King, we also got our first look at a brand-new game from WayForward, the developer of the Shantae series and River City Girls. That title is Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia, and it arrives on Switch later this year.

Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia is an action-RPG with a unique battle system that blends real-time and turn-based elements. The game features an original storyline with over 100 quests to take on, as well as more than 80 Bakugan to collect. As part of the story, you’ll be taking part in a series of Bakugan tournaments while also investigating abnormal earthquake activity that’s been happening in town.

During brawls, you’ll be running around the field in real-time collecting energy cores for your Bakugan while it does battle. As you collect cores, you’ll charge up powerful abilities that your Bakugan can then unleash. In addition to the single-player campaign, you’ll be able to battle other players around the world in online brawls.

Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia launches for Switch on November 3. You can check out the first trailer for the game above.

As for Paper Mario, Nintendo gave us an extended look at some gameplay of the upcoming title, showcasing one of the open environments you’ll explore early on in the adventure and one of the first boss encounters you’ll face. The Origami King releases on Switch next Friday, July 17. You can learn more about the game in our Paper Mario: The Origami King pre-order guide.
